Post-Natal Depression
Commonly, childbirth and caring for a newborn are viewed as joyful events, as a time for celebration, fulfilment and hope. However, many women experience enormous amounts of anxiety and depressed feelings after giving birth, and require treatment in order to recover and cope. Many new moms struggle with issues as:
- The new set of demands a baby brings
- The loss of order and routine
- Changes in their role, including career decisions
- The relationship with their partner and his possible adjustment difficulties to parenting
- Her partner's absence due to work demands or a relationship breakdown; and
- Single parenting
- Isolation
- Financial difficulties
- Unexpectedly difficult birth
Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the symptoms, and with professional help and support, all of them, whether mild or severe forms of post-natal depression, are temporary and treatable with our multidimensional programme and professional staff.
Our unit has specialised facilities for both mother and infant, and we offer a multidimensional treatment and approach, which includes individual psychodynamic, group and family therapy. Mothers are taught to take care of themselves and their babies in the context of their psychological, physiological, emotional and social needs. Not all AKESO Clinics offer these services (where moms and babies can stay together), but we do treat post-natal depression at all our hospitals.
