The response to COVID-19 is continuously evolving as we learn new things about the virus. Akeso has ensured strict compliance to appropriate infection control measures in order to safeguard both staff as well as the patients who come into our facilities. 
All persons who come into an Akeso facility:

  • Must wear a protective face mask. This must be able to securely cover the mouth and nose without needing continuous adjusting.
  • Will need to complete a COVID-19 Screening Questionnaire on accessing the facility.
  • Will be provided with ample hand sanitisation stations and access to bathrooms to wash their hands.

Outpatient consultations

  • Akeso has ensured minimal interaction between in-hospital patients and outpatient clients. This is done to reduce the risk of any possible cross-infections.
  • Our facilities have sufficient cleaning and sanitation processes in place to combat the spread of infection.

In-hospital admissions

  • All in-hospital patients are required to wear face masks for improved infection prevention, including when in groups and when moving around the facility.
  • Treatment options for symptomatic patients will be determined by the treating team.

General information

We take pride in the services we offer and are committed to being active partners in your treatment. However, we need you to be just as active in this partnership. Treatment involves a willingness to talk about the issues in your life with honesty; striving to develop new methods of coping, and it certainly takes courage, motivation and great determination.

Before admission, we will require a doctor’s referral letter, blood results and a competed pre-admission assessment form. On arrival at Montrose Manor, you will be admitted by the nurses. Our nursing staff will require some details from you in order to formulate a nursing care plan. During the first week you will be assessed by the psychiatrist, biokineticist and dietician. You will also be introduced to the therapeutic team and your individual counsellor, who will assess you and explain the details of the therapy programme that will commence shortly after admission.

The Montrose Manor therapy programme is designed to help patients restore themselves to physical, psychological and spiritual strength in preparation for sustainable recovery.

The visiting hours for Akeso Stepping Stones are 14:00-16:00 on Saturday afternoons.

Temperatures range from 07°C in July to 34°C in January. Before packing, it is advisable to check what the temperatures will be during your stay. Besides clothes, you need to bring toiletries, medication, and a plug adaptor. In summer you can bring a beach towel, full piece swimming costume (no bikinis) or swimming trunks, a sun hat and sun block lotion SPF 30+.

Pocket money

For safety purposes pocket money should be transferred, prior to admission, directly into our bank account. You will be allocated a weekly allowance depending on your needs. Any unspent pocket money will be refunded on discharge.


Electronic devices such as laptops, notebooks and tablets need to be handed in on admission. Requests for access to the internet and/or use of computers must be discussed with your counsellor.

Communication with family and friends

Telephone contact with family or friends is permitted only after the first seven days. This allows for time to settle into the programme and allows the family time to process whatever feelings they may have. The family may however contact us at any time. Should the client have small children, contact will be allowed during the first seven days, by arrangement.


We have a laundry facility where clothes can be washed and ironed by the clients. We provide towels for daily use.

In addition to the items that local clients need to bring with them, international clients will also need:


A fixed return flight for approximately three months is recommended depending on the length of stay. We can assist with any changes in flights if required. Patients will be met at Cape Town International Airport by our driver on arrival and transported to Montrose Manor.


A visa will not be required as a 90 day visitor’s visa is issued automatically on arrival in Cape Town for people travelling from the UK or Europe.

Travel insurance

We recommend that clients take out worldwide travel insurance covering medical emergencies.


Eating disorder unit

Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating are complicated and debilitating psychiatric illness that results in pain, confusion and anxiety both for the sufferer and his or her family. The eating disorder unit offers inpatient care in an environment that fosters a positive body image, balanced eating as well as esteem and compassion towards the self.
